BK Memorial Easter Classic 2010 gets epic waves

35th Byron Bay Easter Classic, April 2nd – 4th 2010

LENNOX HEAD SURFER MARCUS ABOODY WINS 35TH BYRON BAY EASTER CLASSIC IN LOCAL SHOWDOWN

Lennox Head surfer Marcus Aboody joined an elite list of surfers, winning the 2010 Byron Bay Classic. Aboody, a Le-Ba Boardriders stalwart, came from behind to win the 25 minute final, held in solid 2 metre waves at Broken Head, south of Byron Bay.

Former WCT world number 2 and 1996 Easter Classic Champion, Danny Wills took an early lead, attacking his first wave with lightning fast manoeuvres to score a 6.83 from the judges. Then Wills’ Byron Bay Boardriders clubmate and 2007 champion, Yerin Brown, took the ascendancy, first scoring a 7.83 from the judges for a set wave he tore apart from start to finish, and then followed up with a long a deep tube on one of the few left-handers surfed over the day to score an 8.33 to have a 2 wave combined score of 16.30 (out a possible 20) to have a combination lead over Aboody and fellow Le-Ba surfer James (Tiapan) Wood.

Aboody then sprung into action on one of the largest right hand sets of the day, with a long tube and a series of sizzling on-edge manoeuvres to score a 9.4 out of 10 to be within reach of Brown. Aboody then ran around the break to paddle back out, putting him in the inside position, and within 5 minutes was on another set wave, which he again he threw caution to the wind with a series of high risk turns to score a 7.57 for a 2 wave combined score of 16.97 (out of a possible 20). This left Brown with 5 minutes to find a wave score of 8.65 to snatch the win. Brown did get a chance in the dying stages, but fell short scoring a 7.97, the wave not providing enough potential to give Brown victory. Danny Wills paced 3rd, and Lennox surfer James ‘Tiapan’ Wood placed 4th in a luckless final after being one of the form surfers of the event.

The Easter Classic is a family affair event, with 11 divisions, over 150 competitors aged from 8 to 60 years of age taking part. The event was also held in Memory of Byron Bay Boardriders President, Ben King, who passed away suddenly 4 years ago.
