Mac’s Milk Bar and Cafe!

“Exciting news! The Mac’s milk bar and café on Bangalow Rd, an established iconic Byron Bay business has been bought by local surf family. With a new makeover and renovation back to the original milk bar style and atmosphere. Mac’s is now a milk bar and deli and is on board with the Byron Bay board riders club.

Supporting local Boardriders comps with a Pig out prize, Hamburger offs and Mac’s vs. surfer food comps.

The menu is still the same just improved with food that will cater for all, from vegan to hamburger lover. The new deli introduces new freshly made quiches, lasagnes, risotto, salads and weekly specials.

Mac’s milk bar and deli captures the principle of the original milk bar from the 1950’s whilst combining it with the original Byron Bay lifestyle and character. For fresh quality food, friendly service and great atmosphere Mac’s is the place to be.”

Due to popularity in 2010, the masters (over 40) and the seniors (over 30) will also have $500 cash for the respective winners of each division. The feature division ‘Open Men’ is always the highest level of competition they will fight it out for the $1500 first place. Open women will also be battling for the $500 first prize. For the kids, the prizes will be outstanding and this is one contest worth adding to the resume. 2011 is set to be a huge year and as it is a non-profit event we would like to thank all the sponsors locally and nationally for their continued strong support of this great event.

Success at Jim Beam Surf Tag finals!

The National Final of the Jim Beam Surf Tag was held over the weekend with the top qualifying clubs from around Australia fighting it out for the title and $15,000 prize money.

The structure of this team event is an hour long heat with 5 surfers representing each club. Each surfer must catch 3 waves with the second wave known as the power wave and scoring double points. The surfer must return to the beach to tag  the next surfer. Our team consisted of Danny Wills, Beau Walker, Luke Stickley, Jarrad Sullivan, Tom Donohoe, Ben Simpson and Lee Miller with each of the playing big parts in the team’s success.

Making it  through their first two heats and entering the Semi Finals with a strong heat, it was going to be a big ask to qualify for the final. Strong performances from Danny Wills and Beau Walker put the team in a great position but it was Luke Stickley’s 10 point ride  that had everyone talking. Two clean turns and an innovative shove-it aerial not only scored a perfect 10 but won Luke a brand new water proof video camera for the highest scoring wave of the weekend. In the final the team had a terrible start not capitilising on two of their power waves, after two surfers they were sitting well behind in fourth position.

Danny wills was next in the water and once again his experience and knowledge proved vital with some stylish and critical surfing, lifting the team and putting them back into contention.

Beau Walker then pottered his way to his own little right hander away from other competitors. With just 20 minutes remaining and two surfers still to catch all their waves the mission was looking impossible. Beau then stroked into a small right with two speed pumps the big guy took flight landing a huge air reverse and scoring an outstanding 7 point ride. Beau then scored strongly on his power wave and his last wave to return to the beach with just 10 minutes remaining.

Jarrad Sullivan then took to the water with the huge task of chasing down North Narrabeen. His first wave scored well with a number of clean turns on his back hand, scoring a 5.5. Unfortunately the waves offered to Jarrad in his race against the clock weren’t enough to snatch the title but this was an exceptional effort by the Byron Bay Team 2nd place and $5000.

Well done to all surfers and a huge thank you to Lee Miller and Danny Wills for their efforts over the weekend.

Byron Bay Knocks Out Le-Ba Stars

THE Lennox-Ballina Boardriders Club, featuring several world-ranked surfers, has made a shock exit from the 2011 Jim Beam Surftag event.

The team was boosted by the late inclusion of boom WCT rookie Owen Wright, but failed to live up to expectations. Global Surftag Australia managing director of Steve Harrison was stunned by Le-Ba’s exit from the event at Duranbah Beach, Tweed Heads, at the weekend.

“They had the best team on paper and I really thought they would cruise in to the national final,” he said. “It’s a shock a loss, but that’s the way it goes in surfing sometimes.”

Lennox Head lads Adam Melling, Stuart Kennedy, James Wood, Marcus Aboody and Wright lost their heat to underdogs Byron Bay. Due to rough conditions each surfer was limited to two waves instead of the scheduled three, with double points coming from the second wave – the power wave. Le-Ba and ASP ranked surfer Stuart Kennedy said not capitalising on power waves had cost them. “We really fell off in the power waves,” Kennedy said. “We all rode solid 7- and 8-pointers on our first waves, but struggled on our second. “Owen (Wright) tried a backhand floater on his second wave; he didn’t land it and ended up snapping his board in half. Had he landed it we probably would have won the heat.” Byron Bay has qualified for the national final after finishing third overall with a combined score of 72.60.

The team comprised Garret Parkes, Ben Simpson, Luke Stickley, Tom Donohoe and Bryce Cameron. Two-time world champion Mick Fanning led Kirra to their third straight victory in Queensland qualifying with a score of 88.07. Snapper Rocks came second on 78.54. They too will progress to the national final on Sydney’s Northern Beaches from February 3 to 5, the same venue as the Surftag final. There is one more Surftag qualifying round, at Cronulla on January 29.

CONGRATULATIONS to our team on this result a massive effort put in by all!!

Straddie Assault 2nd Place!

Our team of surfers and supporters travelled to Stradbroke Island last weekend for the Straddie Assault, one of the longest running team events in Australia. The weekend was a huge success and everyone who attended had an outstanding time.

Team moral was boosted in the lead up to the event and throughout with coaching support from team leader Danny Wills. Team spirit was high and Willsy’s involvement and energy clearly rubbed off on every surfer during the weekend. On Saturday the feature teams event was run and all our surfers did exceptionally well with the conditions on offer.

We were leading the race to the title a majority of the day with excellent wins going to Danny Wills, Tommy Boucat, Henry Phillips, Garrett Parkes and a stand out performance by Luke Stickley. Also adding to our score were Tom Millege, Kirsten Ogden both with a strong 2nd places and Mackie Walker with a 4th place. After a long day it came down to the last heat, Snapper had to win to take the title and unfortunately they did.

All our team can be very proud with an outstanding 2nd place. On the Sunday Garrett Parkes, Danny Wills and Tommy Boucat surfed the doubles event and put in a huge effort making it all the way to the semi finals where they were very unlucky to not make the final, taking out 3rd position.

A huge thank you to the supporters who attended, I think everyone would agree the support on the beach is very important to a successful weekend.

Thanks also to the Grinch for keeping everyone laughing all weekend. WELL DONE TEAM, GO THE BAY!

Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage

BYRON BAY HAS A HUGE PRESENCE IN THE Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage

Some of the nation’s top juniors hit the water on Queensland’s Gold and Sunshine Coasts for the Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage recently.

On the Gold Coast, Byron Bay junior Kirsten Ogden defeated Coolangatta’s Amiya and Brodie Doyle and Kingscliff’s Letarcia Hurtin in beach break peaks at Duranbah to take out the 16-and-under Girls division and secure a spot on the international leg of the prestigious junior surfing series.

“I was able to open the final with a really good ride and that helped my confidence throughout the heat,” said Ogden. “There haven’t been many waves around for quite a while so it was nice to get some good conditions during an event”.

In the 16-and-under Boys final, Byron Bay’s Soli Bailey chalked up a combined score of 16.37, including a near-perfect 9.87, to outclass Lennox Head’s Tom Snellgrove and Queenslanders Mitch Parkinson and Jake Cumberland.

Alyssa Lock and Zac Wightman took out the 13-and-under Girls and Boys divisions respectively.

On the Sunshine Coast, Caloundra talent Eli Steele took out the 16-and-under Boys division in fun waves at Coolum, scoring a heat total of 14.07 to oust Jake Fissenden, Nick Callister and Jackson Lynch.

“This is the first year Ocean and Earth has brought the event to the Sunshine Coast so it was great to have an all local affair,” said Eli.

Wurtulla up-and-comer Kai Hing posted a 16.83 to take home the trophy in the 13-and-under Boys division, ahead of Quinn Bruce, Reef Heazlewood and Kirra Green who finished second to fourth respectively.
